Custom Tattoos in Northampton, MA — Built Around Your Idea
Most tattoo studios in the Pioneer Valley offer custom work on paper, but the design process often feels rushed or generic. At Jones Co Creative Space, custom tattoos in Northampton, MA are the core of what I do — each piece starts from a real conversation, not a flash sheet.
I'm Mike Jones, a tattoo artist and studio operator based in Western Massachusetts. My work covers realism, portraiture, color pieces, and landscapes. If you're coming from Northampton — about 20 minutes from the studio — you'll find the process is intentional and unhurried. I take on a limited number of projects at a time so I can give each one the attention it needs.
What Custom Tattoo Work Looks Like Here
Every project starts with a consultation — in person or via the contact form on the site. You describe the concept, share reference images if you have them, and we talk through placement, scale, and style. I draw the design after that conversation, not before it.
Styles I work in regularly:
- Realism and portraiture — people, animals, detailed reference-based work
- Color tattooing — full-color scenes, florals, nature-based imagery
- Landscapes and environmental pieces — scenic compositions that work with the body's shape
- Black and grey — fine detail, smooth gradients, illustrative linework
The studio also does painting, sculpture, laser engraving, and 3D printing — so if a project crosses into mixed media or you want a complementary physical piece alongside the tattoo, that's possible here in a way it isn't at most shops.
Coming from Northampton, MA
Northampton is roughly 20–25 minutes from Jones Co Creative Space, depending on your route through the Valley. The drive is straightforward and parking near the studio isn't a problem. I work by appointment, so you won't show up and wait — your slot is yours.
If you're not sure whether the commute is worth it for a consultation, we can handle the initial conversation remotely. Once we've aligned on the concept and scope, you come in for the session itself. Many clients from Northampton prefer to do it that way.
Pricing and How Projects Work
Custom tattoo pricing depends on size, complexity, session length, and the amount of drawing involved. I charge an hourly rate for the tattoo session, plus a design fee for original artwork on larger or more complex pieces. Small, simple pieces typically fall in the lower range; large-scale realism or multi-session work sits higher.
A rough sense of what to expect:
- Small custom pieces — a few hundred dollars, usually completed in one session
- Medium pieces (palm-sized, moderate detail) — mid-range, often one to two sessions
- Large or complex work — quoted per project; multi-session pieces are broken into manageable appointments
I don't quote final prices before seeing the concept. Reach out with your idea and I'll give you an honest range once I understand what's involved. A deposit is required to hold your appointment and goes toward the total cost.
When Jones Co Creative Space Isn't the Right Fit
I book selectively, which means my availability isn't always immediate. If you need a tattoo within a week or two, I may not be the right option right now — a shop with more artists and walk-in availability will serve you better on a tight timeline.
I also don't do every style equally. Heavily geometric, neo-traditional, or script-heavy pieces aren't where my work is strongest. If that's what you're after, I'll tell you plainly rather than take on a project I'm not the best fit for.
The studio is a working creative space, not a high-volume tattoo shop. That suits some clients well and isn't what others are looking for — both are fair.
